The news site GrandPrix.com reports the FIA has released the team/driver entries for the 2007 F1 season. Fernando Alonso, as the world champion, carries the #1 with him to his new team McLaren Mercedes, which apparently inherits the #2 (for GP2 champ & F1 rookie Lewis Hamilton) as a result, leaving the world champion constructor — Renault — with #3 and #4. Interesting…and I assume this means McLaren also gets the first two pit stalls? Midland — which became Spyker MF1 in 2006 with the sale of the team — is now renamed Spyker F1. Renaming a team more than once in five years requires agreement of all teams, so apparently that happened (couldn’t imagine why it shouldn’t).

Update 25 Feb. 2007: With the report this weekend of news that Scott Speed is signed for Toro Rosso, the driver lineup is at last finalized, just three weeks before the season opener in Melbourne (which I will miss since I’m driving down to Florida for the 12 Hours of Sebring).
