I have a Uniden SC230 scanner I use for auto races, so I can listen to radio chatter (drivers, crew, officials, commentators, etc) when I attend motorsports events (ALMS, Formula 1, etc). A while ago I subscribed to the SC230 Yahoo discussion group. I don’t participate since the group is mostly NASCAR fans, so there’s not much in the way of useful information for me as a road race fan. I have to admit I stick around because I get amusement from how badly the English language is butchered in posts found there. Bad prose occurs in just about any discussion forum you can find, but the SC230 Yahoo group has particularly atrocious examples. Here are some examples:

“they do not change frequencies they have 2 only 4 were use the 2 frequencies did have to move some like add the 26 i can tell u want i have heard a;lot stay with the car some go with the driver “

and a later response (same person)

“when we go we pay $15 that a shirt a book coupons are inside for the for the feq one coupon for the truck or busch other for nextle and other coupon for that 1;64 car with the date on the car that not bad seen where the trailer have them for $8 or up some look like flyer and some look like fax copy and have the same thing a get off line for free have u try site for free sanner feq they even have mc-d drive thu lol” [sic]

and yet again (same person)

“do u live in texas we go to all the texas races we even get to see the driver at our work the thurday before races day in april we do not have a sc230 we have one that close too it but use the fanview with nov race and going to buy one off the website you can use it for the races or footballl” [sic]

I swear to God I did not change a single character. It’s there in all its authentic jaw-dropping glory. What’s really sad is I can almost (but not quite) understand the last one if I turn my head sideways enough.

…and this person probably wants a constitutional amendment declaring English the official US language.

No doubt, and with a new name to distinguish it. “Manglish” came to mind, but that’s already used. How about “Trashlish”?

Speaking of racing I came across this the other day –a 1700HP twin turbo viper at the drag strip:

Honestly, I think 1/4 mile drag racing is probably even less interesting than oval track racing. When I watch road racing, I’m more curious about apex speeds (where the action is) than straight line speeds.
