I managed to watch a few minutes of the Daytona 500 without falling asleep, and I think I now understand what the lucky dog rule is in NASCAR. The lucky dog that manages to keep going after the demolition derby is over, wins.

Did I get it right? All that going around in circles business makes me dizzy…

I pretty much agree it’s very boring to watch on TV. I have been to the speedway outside of Kansas City for a Busch league race. (Think Winston Cup minus 300 or so HP). Really, more than anything, I think NASCAR is a sensory and cultural experience, more like a Rock Concert than any kind of sophisticated test of driving skill. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure it’s not easy to race bumper to bumper at 200+ MPH, especially when it’s kind of accepted to bump the guy in front of you into the wall.

The thing that surprised me the most was that Toyota (that’s right, Toyota) had an entry in the Daytona 500. I got to thinking I wonder how far back in the design archives Toyota had to go to find a 350 cubic inch V8 pushrod engine as dictated by Winston Cup rules! Or I wonder if they just use a Chevy powerplant.
