Leopard Roars with Java 6
29Apr08
Apple released Java SE6 for Leopard today. This is a much anticipated release among Java developers using Macs. Go get it from the usual place in the Apple menu. It looks like it also installed the 64-bit Java 5 runtime, because I don’t remember seeing it before in the Java Preferences app. I know that Java 6 requires Leopard, but I don’t know whether it requires a Core 2 Duo (i.e. 64-bit hardware) as the preview releases did.

Once Java 6 update 10 is released in a few months, you can start waiting…and waiting…and waiting…all over again. LOL
Roar? meow really. They are the only company who managed to tie Java to a single vendors single specific CPU family along with a single OS Point release.
I don’t understand why Apple can’t do a 32 bit version, at least for Intel. Apple doesn’t seem to want to say anything about what they intend for Java on the Mac platform.
In any case, I believe all the major JDK releases from Apple have been tied to an OS release. Java 5 doesn’t run on anything earlier than Tiger, AFAIK. Apple doesn’t seem to show a whole lot of interest in making Mac OS X a Java development platform.
